Background of the study
In the context of public health, informed decision-making is essential for fostering a healthy society. In Suleja Local Government Area, Niger State, informal education has been introduced as an innovative approach to enhance students’ ability to make well-informed health decisions. Informal health education—delivered through community health workshops, peer-led discussions, and interactive health fairs—provides students with practical knowledge on nutrition, disease prevention, and general well-being (Uche, 2023). This alternative educational model bypasses the limitations of traditional curricula by offering dynamic and relatable content that is directly applicable to the students’ lives (Babatunde, 2024). Moreover, informal education creates an environment where students can discuss health issues openly, ask questions, and engage in hands-on activities that reinforce their learning (Ibrahim, 2023).

The integration of informal health education within the school system in Suleja has been driven by the recognition that many students lack access to reliable health information. As a result, they are more vulnerable to misinformation and unhealthy practices. Informal educational programs have been designed to fill this gap by providing up-to-date, evidence-based information in an accessible manner (Uche, 2023). These programs encourage active learning, critical thinking, and behavioral change, all of which are crucial for making informed health decisions. Collaborative efforts between health professionals, educators, and community leaders have further enhanced the reach and effectiveness of these initiatives (Babatunde, 2024).

Despite the progress made, several challenges persist. Limited resources, inadequate training for facilitators, and cultural barriers often restrict the full potential of informal health education (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the sporadic nature of these programs means that not all students benefit consistently from the available health information. Nevertheless, the growing interest in informal education as a means of improving public health outcomes underscores its importance. The ability of informal education to adapt rapidly to emerging health challenges makes it a vital tool in empowering students with the knowledge and skills required for making informed decisions about their health (Uche, 2023).

Statement of the problem
In Suleja Local Government Area, the ability of students to make informed health decisions is compromised by several systemic challenges. The conventional health education provided in schools is often rigid and outdated, failing to address the current health issues faced by students. As a result, many students rely on unreliable sources for health information, leading to poor decision-making and adverse health outcomes (Babatunde, 2024). Informal education initiatives have emerged as a potential solution; however, their sporadic implementation and limited scope raise concerns about their overall effectiveness (Ibrahim, 2023).

A major problem is the lack of standardized informal health education programs that can be uniformly applied across schools. Many educators are not adequately trained to deliver health information in an engaging and practical manner, resulting in inconsistent messaging (Uche, 2023). Additionally, socio-cultural factors and stigmas surrounding certain health topics further hinder open discussions, leaving students with partial or distorted views of health practices (Babatunde, 2024). The fragmentation of these initiatives prevents the development of a cohesive and sustained approach to health education, thereby undermining the potential benefits of informal learning (Ibrahim, 2023). Addressing these issues is critical, as the current gaps in health education directly affect students’ ability to make informed choices that influence their long-term well-being.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the influence of informal education on students’ health decision-making abilities.

  2. To identify challenges associated with the implementation of informal health education programs.

  3. To develop recommendations for improving the consistency and impact of informal health education.

Research questions:

  1. How does informal education affect students’ ability to make informed health decisions?

  2. What challenges impede the effective delivery of informal health education in schools?

  3. What strategies can be employed to enhance the effectiveness of informal health education?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Informal education significantly improves students’ health decision-making skills.

  2. Inadequate training and resources hinder the effective implementation of informal health education.

  3. A standardized approach to informal health education enhances its overall impact.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of informal education in empowering students in Suleja Local Government Area to make informed health decisions. The findings will provide essential insights for educators, health professionals, and policymakers to enhance health education strategies. By identifying key challenges and proposing actionable recommendations, the research aims to create a more effective health education framework that can be replicated in similar contexts. Ultimately, the study will contribute to improved public health outcomes and a more informed youth population.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of informal education on students’ ability to make informed health decisions in Suleja Local Government Area, focusing on current program implementation, resource constraints, and cultural factors within the local context.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Informal education: Non-traditional, experiential learning that occurs outside the formal curriculum.

  2. Health decisions: Choices related to personal and public health practices.

  3. Informed: Having access to accurate, evidence-based information.
